Journal 3

We were asked to write a paragraph about Mrs Dubose. When writing, while trying to remember Atticus' words about getting into someone's skin. and to try to understand Mrs Dubose, and why she behaves the way she does. so here goes....

Mrs Dubose is actually quite insperational in the book because she is battling an adiction with morphine. Although Jem can't see this he just thinks that she is a craby, old woman who just yelles out whats in her mind at people in the street. When Jem went berserk and destroyed her garden and had to read to her, he got a look into the struggle she was having making herself free of the adiction. He doesnt see the battle for as hard as it is, I think he just thinks she is having fits because she is old. Also he doesnt see her presant of one of the flowers of the plants he destroyed as the deep thanks and forgivnes Mrs Dubose ment it for. He thinks she is almost stalking him from beyond the grave but really she is forever greatfull for his help that allowed her to get over the addiction before she died. Jem would have been able to see this deeper meaning of the present if he had taken Atticus's advice of getting into someone elses skin and seeing thier point of veiw. Personaly I admire Mrs Dubose's determination and dedication to the goal she has set for herself to free herself of the addiction to morphine and I think it is saying if we put our minds to it any challenge is possible.

Today Tom was arrested, i cant beleive it his life is just going from bad to worse. Havinig been arrested he leave his family with no bread winner. If he had been white they might not have even put him in prison or at least had have a help program to help his family well at least the church is putting a hamper together. He wont get free of charge none of us ever do the best he'll ge will be lifetime in prison at least he has the one man that will be able to keep the jury in indesision for long enough. "Atticus ain't ever whipped me since I can remember. I wanta keep it that way." (Jem, p. 62)

This quote shows that the relationship between Jem and Atticus is very understanding and Atticus is a strong beleiver in not smacking his kids. It also shows that Jem and his sister scout value Atticus's trust and dont want to let him down. This shows the amount of value they place on Atticus's trust and dont want to lose it they know he is an understanding man but still dont want to disobey him directly. Atticus probebly relies on this trust to stop Scout and Jem from doing anything extream and to keep them from becoming, like the Ewells, out of control. this trust that Atticus has given Jem and Scout is a excelent way to teach children the value of trust and the value of learning the difference between right and wrong. I also Think Jem and Scout apreciate this trust because it makes them feel as if Atticus is treating them as adults and not as childeren that can't be trusted no matter what. This quote brings to the surface many feeelings such as trust and provides more insight into Jem's mind.
